Pet Insurance

Pet insurance pays, partly or in total, for veterinary treatment of the insured person’s ill or injured pet.

As veterinary medicine is increasingly employing expensive medical techniques and drugs, and owners have higher expectations for their pet’s health care and standard of living than previously, the market for pet insurance has increased.

Pet insurance companies are beginning to offer the pet owner more of an ability to customize their coverage by allowing them to choose their own level of deductible or co-insurance. This allows the pet owner to control their monthly premium and choose the level of coverage that suits them the best.

There are some major differences between human and veterinary insurance. No veterinarian accepts insurance. Put simply, the pet owner is responsible to pay for the pet’s care initially, then the insurance company reimburses the pet owner after. The agreement is between the pet owner and the insurance company.

Major Insurance Companies

Issues to consider

  • Whether congenital and hereditary conditions (like hip dysplasia, heart defects, eye cataracts or diabetes) are covered;

  • How the reimbursement is calculated (based on the actual vet bill, a benefit schedule, or usual and customary rates);

  • Whether the deductible is on a per-incident or an annual basis;

  • Whether there are any limits or caps applied (per incident, per year, age or over the pet’s lifetime); and

  • Whether there is an annual contract that determines anything diagnosed in the previous year of coverage is considered pre-existing the next year.

  • Are pre-existing conditions covered? This is the biggest problem with pet insurance.

Boarding

Since we are a veterinary clinic that focuses on treating sick patients, we try to refer boarding to VIPet Boarding facility across the street from our clinic.

Vaccines

Before we perform any service (Boarding, Day Care, Nail Trim, or Bath) we require all dogs and cats have proof from a licensed veterinarian of the following:

Dogs: Rabies, DHPP (Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo, Parainfluenza), Leptospirosis, Bordetella (Kennel Cough)

Cats: Rabies, FVRCCP (Feline Herpes, Calicivirus, Chlamydophila, Panleukopenia), FeLV (Feline Leukemia)

  • Pets that are exempt from vaccines by their veterinarian are accepted here. Must have documentation from your veterinarian. Vets occasionally do this for the health and safety of the animal.

We do our best to make this easy on you. You can email it to us at info@WilkinsonVetClinic.com, bring in a hard copy to us, have your vet call us, or give us the info to your vet and we can call them.

What do I need to bring?

We provide everything your pet needs to be comfortable. For their stay:

  • Food: We encourage you to bring your pet’s food to ensure they eat the food they are comfortable with while they are with us. Please have their food and treats labeled. It also helps us if you pre-package each meal in zip-lock bags. Please do not bring large dog food bags. Exceptions are available for long term lodging guests. Note: If needed, we will provide our in-house food at no extra charge which is a digestive-friendly premium prescription food.

  • Collars/leads: Do not leave your leash. We have leashes. You may leave a collar with identifying information.

  • Medication: If your pet is on any prescription medication, the medication must be in the original packaging from your veterinarian with instructions (additional fee applies).

  • Additional items: You're welcome to bring small blankets and bedding. We are unable to wash beds and blankets that your pet gets dirty.

  • Toys: Please do not bring toys.

Different rates during holidays and peak times

Due to increased demand and labor costs during the holidays, please note, there is a $3/night price adjustment per pet during the following peak holiday times:

  • Spring Break - (March 10-20, 2023)

  • Easter Weekend - (April 6-10, 2023)

  • Memorial Day Weekend - (May 26-30, 2023)

  • Independence Day and Weekend - (July 1-7, 2023)

Handling

  • For pets that are aggressive, difficult/challenging to handle, or that require significantly more time, effort, or staff to handle, there will be a $7.5 handling fee on top of the price of the requested service. If we are not able to safely handle your pet, we may need to sedate them for handling. If your pet is sedated, no handling fee will be added. Unfortunately, we are not able to handle all aggressive pets without sedation. We are not able to board dangerous or aggressive pets.
